Super Mario Galaxy First Impressions

Recently I got SMG, as some of you might know. In fact, I will continue playing it in a while and the Live Streaming will be back.

But now I will just give to all you my first impressions, that might, and in fact, will, differ from yours once you get the game. So please, don’t bash me (though there won’t be reasons, I think..) if there’s something you don’t like.

In another sidenote, please notice that english is not my mother tongue, so, though I’ll do my best explaining what I felt after playing this game, there might be some grammar/sintaxis errors. I’m sorry.

As I said, I got this game around 24 hours ago and I have already played around 10 hours. The best 10 hours of gaming I have had in a very long time. The graphics, the sound, the gameplay, the art.. everything is great in this game.
Graphically, and in a Wii-level, this game has probably the highest level we have seen until now. The quality of the textures, lighting effects and almost everything around you looks so nice that makes you wonder what the hell are the other Wii developers doing.
But of course, graphics wouldn’t be that important if the artistic level doesn’t follow. Mario Galaxy will remind you of Mario 64 because of the level’s art. Actually, even the music will remind you of this Mario 64. We got all the typical stages: Desert with tornadoes, a green field with goombas, koopas and whatnot. Even an enchanted house and a big ammount of innovative stages.
For example, there is an stage wich is divided in boxes that are connected, but each one has the gravity changed, so you have to take care when jumping from one box to the other, and think were are you going to jump, because it might take you straight to your death. Actually, this pattern is followed in a few stages, but each one has something different so you won’t get tired.

The music of this game is also something worth mentioning. Maybe the sound quality is not the best one (I can’t tell, I have an SDTV and I use the TV speakers..), but the track’s quality itself is great. From the disney-esque music on the terminal (the lobby, where you choose where to go, kind of like the Peach Castle in M64), to one of my best tracks, the one that sound when Mario has the ice-related hability. It also features a lot of Mario 64 tracks that I will let you find out, so no mention at all. But you will really enjoy listening to them, that’s for sure.

The gameplay is basically the same thing: Great. Whenever you first start playing for real (and not the pre-intro), you might feel dissoriented because of the whole running upside-down, etc.. but it doesn’t take too long to get used to it. At least it didn’t take more than one minute to be ready to kick some koopas.
Besides this, all the movements are the same than in Super Mario Sunshine, plus a new one where you move the wiimote and Mario makes an spin attack. There are sometimes some minigames with their own movement rules, but they explain them before you get to play, so there’s no need to worry.

Well.. I have not finished this game so I can’t really tell you if it’s the best Wii game or not, but if it continues like this, it will be so, by far. At least for me, obviously.
If I could rate this game, it would receive a 11/10 or so. It’s just already in my top 5 games ever.

If you are wondering about getting it or not, I would really recommend you to get it if you enjoyed Mario 64. This game is like it’s second part, in so many ways..

I loved Super Mario 64, but Galaxy doesn’t feel the same to me. The problem is it guides/forces you along one path each level, without any chance to explore or anything. It made it feel very tedious to me, and I didn’t enjoy it much.
