Pokémon Seeing Some Love - DSvision Movie Download

August 14th, 2008

Early July saw the release of a Japan system called DSvision, allowing people to purchase downloadable products such as comics, movies, and more. I remember when Nintendo sold those GBA ports of tv show episodes…Nickelodeon capitalized on that decently well. Now that the DS is seeing some of that interactivity, when does it come out to the U.S.?

Well, time may tell. But for the moment, Japan has the good stuff.

Pokémon movies are becoming available on this new feature. IGN describes the first few purchases of the Pokémon products below.

The first movie will be Mewtwo Strikes Back, which will be available for download at the DSvision.jp site on August 20 at 500 yen.

Four other Pokemon movies will be available as special bundles. Lucario and the Mystery of Mew will be bundled with all the hardware required for the DSvision service for 4,280 yen. The Power of One, Spell of the Unown, and Celebi: Voice of the Forest will be sold as individual microSD cards for 2,980 yen each. These will all be available on September 11.

The first will be “Mewtwo Strikes Back” (I have this movie on VHS, =D). Mewtwo Strikes Back is set after the “clone wars” between Ash and Mewtwo in “Pokémon: The First Movie”. Team Rocket is performing crude acts against wild Pokémon, and with Giovanni at the helm, things can only get worse. But when Ash meets Mewtwo a second time, he doesn’t remember a thing. I won’t spoil more of the movie. More movies will be available for download in the future. Of course, the older movies cost less. I’m not converting yen or anything, don’t ask. =P

Nintendo of Japan is also creating DSvision products as actual software you can buy from stores, so not everything is sold on the web. This could be a pro or con depending on what kind of shopper you are. If you shop on the web, get it on the site. If you don’t have internet access…I don’t know how you could be reading this article. Those who don’t have the web can pick up a movie later this fall if they feel compelled.

Just like Club Nintendo, DSvision looks to be yet another exclusive feature for Japan. Sucks to be the U.S. (or Europe).
