Females choose 2D gaming

December 18th, 2007
Results indicate that 2D electronic games are easier than 3D electronic games for both females and males, and the majority of females would rather play games that are “easy” while the majority of males would rather play games that are “challenging”. Females tended not to like the confusion in the 3D video games, whether it was unclear directions, objectives, camera perspectives, or not knowing how to control the character. Females may also prefer games that have dreamlike graphics to games with realistic graphics. Results also point toward a steeper learning curve for females when playing a 3D  game than a 2D game.

I would have to agree, I want to know how many females (gamer and non-gamers) fell in love with Super Paper Mario.

This "study" seems rather stereotypical, but I guess it could be true.

3-D games confuse me ever so much! I don’t have the brain compacity to understand how something could move in THREE DIMENSIONS! And I can never figure out how to press the D-pad or control stick and make my character move. I’ll go back to playing Barbie now.

    that sounds rather stereotypical >_>
I strongly disagree with this, 2D games are usually more challenging than 3D. Comparing Super Mario Bros 1 and Super Mario Sunshine, there are likely way more complaints of the game being easy in Sunshine. Same for Zelda 1 and Twilight Princess, Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis and Sonic Heroes, etc.

I’m a girl and I’ve played all the games mentioned above… and Super Paper Mario too.

In all honesty…I don’t know what the majority of girls think of "3D" games. But I can take a pretty good guess that this article is correct.
The reason for that…is that I’m a girl that absolutely loves a good 3D video game with an intricate adventure and challenge. But I rarely come across a girl like me that I can relate with in that area. So I’m always hanging out with the guys when it comes to that sort of thing.
But I love where I’m at. :] The "girly-girl" appearence has never really appealed to me.

thats BS all the 2d games are generally harder than 3d games.

    kirbykiller Says:

well my sister actually loves the paper mario series and actually beat the first one before me. aside from that there are plenty of really tough 2d games that are much harder than many 3d ones

    NGAMER9 Says:

Extremly sterotypical, and not true imo.  And I play Metroid games, which ae defintley hard, so I fail to see how 2d games are easier than 3d…

    XLS1 Says:

Alright, give 1000 girls Contra, and see how the results change.  >_>
    *Calls BS*

    Player911 Says:

My wife completely rejects 3D games just like she does action movies. Load up old skewl Mario and she’s hogging the controller. I agree with this completely. Most girls fit the bill, but a few rare strays get into hardcore gaming.

    Chris Says:

How’s this, MODERN 2D games are easier than 3D games. For example, NSMB seems a lot easier to me than SMG. (They were both on the easy side though… but that’s really OK.) And I think the survey was more geared to the actual CONTROLS of the games. A Dual analog control setup is one of the most complicated setups, especially for non-gamers.

Also, (I’m male) and I prefer stylized graphics to realistic ones. It may not have to be cheerful, but I definately go for the bright colors first.

    MarioMK1 Says:

Seems logical to me. Heck, practically the only two 3D games my sister is willing to play is Animal Crossing and Wind Waker :p

    Derek Rumpler Says:

I think the issue is a hardcore female gamer versus a casual one. It is given that games are made to largely appeal to men and that the largest demographic is male. Hence, many girls would probably only play them occasionally and might not care to acquaint themselves with the controls or mechanics of many 3D games. It has nothing to do with stereotype. Hardcore female gamers would probably tend to be the exception to this rule.
