The Conduit review

July 3rd, 2009

After over a year of anticipation and hype, it’s finally time to step into Mr. Ford’s shoes and battle the alien menace known as the Drudge. High Voltage Software, a relatively minor development team up until now, has provided constant updates on the title, promising a First-Person Shooter (FPS) experience worthy of Wii owners, with twelve-player online multiplayer, and more control customization than you can shake a stick at…whatever that means. After building momentum for months and months, The Conduit has arrived, ready to make a big splash on the Wii. It may not be the tsunami that many were hoping for and expecting, but there are some fun if rough waves while the ride lasts.

Deadly Creatures review

June 27th, 2009

It’s not a topic most people like to dwell on: the creepy crawlies that scuttle across the floor, carrying enough venom to paralyze their victims, or worse. But that’s exactly the focus of Deadly Creatures, where you take command of both a tarantula and a scorpion in a dusty, rural setting as the two arachnids battle bugs and beasts as they struggle to survive. It’s enough to make your skin crawl, watching these pests creep over rocks, walls, and ceilings, yet it makes for a surprisingly satisfying adventure, while it lasts.

Furry Legends on WiiWare takes inspiration from Lost Winds

June 25th, 2009

In an exclusive interview with Nin-ten-do.com, Gamelion’s Lukasz Szczepanski, producer of the upcoming WiiWare title Furry Legends, admits the similarities between Lost Winds and his game:

- Furry Legends has received many comparisons with Lost Winds. Were you inspired by that games look or is it just coincidence that there are similarities. Maybe you feel they both look different and don’t understand the comparisons?

We certainly hear your concerns, and we’re already hard at work to address these issues. The most common thing here is similarity to Lost Winds. While we were certainly inspired by Frontier’s work, it is not our intention to copy it in any way. A few things overlap here, we have pretty much the same graphical effects, which makes the two games very similar at a first glance, compared to other (more or less competitive) products, which are either 2D or do not use shading and lightning very well, if at all. The second thing is the environment; you can create a forest and caves only in so many ways. However, we do admit its scarily close to Lost Winds, because of the vibrant colors, setting, oversaturated lighting and so on

Hey, if there’s any game you would want to imitate, it’s the critically acclaimed Lost Winds, right? He goes on to discuss the controls and visuals in this upcoming title, emphasizing the use of physics to navigate the colorful world. Inspiration from Lost Winds or no, Furry Legends is looking to be a quality WiiWare title. Be sure to  hit the link for the full interview and a video of the game in motion.

lol Shia LaBeouf

June 22nd, 2009

In a recent interview with Big Download actor Shia La Beouf (the actor known for playing that dude in Transformers, helping to ruin Indiana Jones, and for the easily forgotten about Even Stevens) was asked what he thought about with the new Transformers game coming out for all major platforms. It was then where he came out with he said some things to help “further” his career…

(BD) Have you checked out the Wii Transformers game?

(SL) I haven’t been able to play the Wii game because my hand is broken. I’ve just been playing Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. I would imagine that the Wii experience will be like…I don’t mess with the Wii, to be honest with you. It’s kind of an amateur console. I’m not into the Wii thing.

(BD)What’s wrong with the Wii?

(SL)This is how in a simple way you can find out if it’s a gamer you want to play with. Ask them if they have a Wii. If they say yes, get the f*** out of there.

Seriously Shia? If you were truly a gamer you would actually be somewhat able to come out with a more valid excuse to help support your opinion that the Wii sucks. “Oh I don’t like waggling my hand”, that excuse I heard so many times… playing the Wii requires little movement, and sometimes none whenever the Gamecube/ VC controller come into to play. You could have at least came up with the more valid excuse like “There’s too much shovel ware.”

Also… you’re suppose to be helping to ADVERTISE the game, not trying to demote another version.

Then again, it is a game based on a movie, and we all know the bad rap they have. Heck, if anything all this would do is cause mis-informed gamers to shell out another extra 10 dollars on the 360 and PS3 versions, then only to figure out that they wasted money on shovel ware.

Punch-Out!!! Wii review

June 19th, 2009

punch-out-boxart

Punch-Out may have begun as an arcade game, but it was Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out on the Nintendo Entertainment System that brought the attention of thousands of gamers. It was this game that introduced video games to my family over twenty years ago and began an entire household’s love of gaming. Now, after fifteen years of silence since the release of Super Punch-Out on the Super Nintendo, Little Mac is back in the ring, ready to box his way to the top and take on a variety of oddball fighters along the way. Introducing a few new features but retaining many classic boxers, Punch-Out for the Wii brings back all the quick reflex requiring, pattern memorizing, frantic boxing fun to Nintendo’s popular home console. Get ready for a challenge, this one is a contender.

YouTube Video Battle! The Pokémon Song and Mario 2 History

June 18th, 2009

Today marks the official debut of NSider’s YouTube Video Battle! I’m not sure how often I will do these, but hopefully there will be many more in the future.

The object is simple: watch two videos that have something in common (even if it’s indirectly). Simply provide your feedback on which kind of video you want to see more of, or which one you wish never seen the light of day (if you really feel that way about either!).

The first video comes from the creator of PIKACHU BREAD, applemilk1988. In this video, she gets some Japanese people on the street to sing the English version of the Pokémon theme song. She also enters a used video game store in Japan, in which she insults SEGA, and questions the existence of Super Mario USA.

Speaking of Super Mario USA, that’s what the second video is about. This video comes from The Gaming Historian. Why was Super Mario Bros. 2 so different from the other games, and what exactly are Super Mario USA, and Super Mario Bros. :The Lost Levels?

Give your feedback, and any suggestions for future editions of NSider’s YouTube Video Battle!
